Dis-Chem vs Takealot vs Clicks: where is whey protein cheapest?

In South Africa no retailer is cheapest on every tub. In October 2026 Dis-Chem matches the brand shops (NPL and Biogen to the cent), Clicks undercuts on local labels such as Nutritech and Black Bull, and Takealot is cheapest on some listings, for example ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Isolate at R699 (undated PriceCheck snapshot) against R900 on the brand's shop. Compare per 30 g of protein, not per tub.

Which South African retailer is cheapest for whey protein?

None wins across the board. In South Africa the biggest price gaps are between a brand's own shop and Takealot, not between Dis-Chem and Clicks. Dis-Chem's online sports store (Dis-Chem Living Fit) copies the brand shops of NPL and Biogen almost to the cent, so buying from either gives the same price. Clicks stocks cheaper local labels. Takealot discounts some brands below their own shops.

What about delivery costs?

Takealot raised its free-delivery minimum from R650 to R750 and charges R75 for standard delivery below that (EWN, 2 September 2026). Its checkout also defaults to faster paid options, so choose a standard date if you want the free tier. Add delivery before concluding Takealot is cheaper: a R639 concentrate under the threshold costs R714 delivered, still below the ATP shop's R800 before that shop's own delivery fee, which we have not verified. We did not verify Dis-Chem or Clicks delivery thresholds this month, so check them at checkout.

Is there a counterfeit risk on marketplaces?

Takealot is also a marketplace, so the same tub can be sold by third-party sellers. Buy items sold and shipped by Takealot or by the brand's official store, check the batch and best-before date on arrival, and be wary of a price far below every other listing. We found no published South African data on how common counterfeit whey is, so treat this as sensible caution, not a measured risk. Our guide on how to spot fake whey lists the label checks.

How should you compare whey prices?

Tub price misleads because scoop sizes and protein per scoop differ. Divide the price by the grams of protein in the tub and multiply by 30. Our per 30 g protein table and the cheapest whey per serving answer do the maths, and the best whey protein in South Africa page ranks products by method. Treat struck-through "was" prices, such as the R950 shown beside ATP's R699 on Takealot, as marketing.
