Which grass-fed wheys can you buy?
| Product | Size and price | What is stated |
|---|
| ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla WPI | 800 g, R1 050 (ATP shop; Takealot R1 050, undated PriceCheck snapshot) | 100% grass-fed isolate of Irish origin, real vanilla, no sweeteners, 18 servings (about R58 per serving) |
| ATP Fitness Grass-fed Unflavoured WPI | 800 g, R779 to R1 000 (Takealot, undated PriceCheck snapshots) | not on the ATP shop in our check; two snapshots disagree |
| Biogen Grass Fed Whey | 750 g, R775 (Biogen shop) | "from grass-fed cattle"; whey type (concentrate or isolate) not stated; no certifying body named |
How big is the grass-fed premium?
Within ATP's own range, the grass-fed vanilla isolate is R1 050 against R950 for the standard vanilla isolate: R100 more per 800 g tub, or R12.50 more per 100 g, about 10.5% extra. On Takealot (undated PriceCheck snapshots) the grass-fed unflavoured isolate (R779 to R1 000) sits R80 to R301 above the standard unflavoured at R699. Biogen's Grass Fed Whey costs R775 per 750 g (R103 per 100 g) against R54 per 100 g for its Complete Whey, so roughly double.
What does "grass-fed" mean nutritionally?
Less than the marketing suggests. Milk from pasture-fed cows can have somewhat more omega-3 and conjugated linoleic acid in its fat, but whey isolate has very little fat, so those differences largely disappear in the tub. Per gram of protein, muscle outcomes are the same as for conventional whey (ISSN). We found no South African legal definition of "grass-fed" on whey, and Biogen's page names no certifying body, so look for a named certification scheme or ask the brand for evidence. See grass-fed vs regular whey.
Who should buy grass-fed?
Choose it if you value pasture-based dairy, origin, or flavour and cleanliness, and accept paying about 10% more for the same protein. If you only care about muscle and budget, a standard isolate or concentrate does the same job for less (best whey isolate).
What are the ATP trade-offs?
- No protein per serving or third-party certification published.
- The grass-fed vanilla is the most expensive ATP whey per 100 g (R131.25).
- A young brand (April 2024), with few flavours; the unflavoured grass-fed version appears only on Takealot.
- Origin is stated on the brand's materials; we have not verified a certificate.
A credible alternative is Biogen Grass Fed Whey, which is cheaper per tub but with fewer stated details.
Safety
Whey is milk protein: avoid with a milk allergy and check with a doctor if you have kidney disease or are under 18.
