There is no clear winner, because most listings do not publish protein per serving. Dis-Chem lists only seven casein products, so we list verified ones and say what is missing. Casein is the slow-digesting milk protein; its main use is a pre-sleep dose of 30–40 g (ISSN).

How do you compare them?
Only NPL gives enough data to compute cost per protein: at R629.99 for 750 g and 22 g per 30 g serving, it works out at about R34 per 30 g of protein, close to NPL's own Platinum Whey (about R33). Primal and Nutritech cost less per 100 g of powder (R67 and R50), but without a protein figure we cannot say they cost less per gram of protein. ON is about R133 per 100 g of powder, the dearest option.
Is casein worth buying?
Evidence is moderate. A 40 g dose before sleep improved overnight protein balance after evening training (Res et al., 2012), and the ISSN notes it does not blunt fat burning. For muscle over weeks, total daily protein matters more than type, so a second whey scoop is a cheaper alternative. Food sources such as milk, yoghurt and cottage cheese also supply casein. See casein vs whey.
Who should skip it?
Milk allergy, lactose-sensitive users (casein contains some lactose), and anyone cutting calories: 30–40 g adds roughly 120–160 kcal. See a doctor or dietitian if you have kidney disease.
How should you choose?
Take it 30–60 minutes before bed on training days, mix with water or milk, and check the label for protein per serving and sweeteners. Our best whey protein page covers the main protein picks, and when to take whey covers timing.
