"Best" splits into two questions: which tastes most like a milkshake, and which has the shortest ingredient list. Taste is subjective, so we compare ingredients and price, not reviews. Prices are October 2026.

Why does real cocoa taste different?
Sweetened chocolate wheys combine cocoa with a sweetener system (often sucralose) and flavourings to give a sweet, rounded profile. A whey with only cocoa tastes more bitter and less sweet, because nothing masks the cocoa's natural bitterness. Some people find that more satisfying; others find it too plain. Blend it with banana, milk or a little honey if you want sweetness without a sweetener.
What is the cost of going cocoa-only?
ATP's cocoa concentrate at R85 per 100 g compares with NPL Platinum Whey at R77 and USN BlueLab at R69. ATP does not publish protein per serving, so we compare it per 100 g of powder only.
What are the trade-offs of the ATP cocoa?
- No published protein per serving or third-party certification.
- Few flavours and a young brand (April 2024).
- Less sweet than mainstream chocolate wheys.
A credible alternative for a conventional, well-documented chocolate whey is USN BlueLab, which states 23.6 g protein per 32 g scoop and Informed Choice on its page (register not checked).
How should you choose?
- Want it sweet and cheap: a sucralose-sweetened blend such as USN BlueLab or NPL.
- Want fewer ingredients: ATP cocoa, and add your own sweetener if needed.
- Sensitive to sweeteners or sugar alcohols: read the ingredient list on the tub, since many Dis-Chem pages show it as an image.
