How do you spot fake whey protein in South Africa?

Counterfeit and mislabelled powders are most likely on marketplace listings, social-media sellers and "too good to be true" deals. There is no public South African register of fakes, so you rely on a checklist. Prices below are October 2026.

What are the seven checks?

1. The seller. Buy from the brand's own shop, Dis-Chem, Clicks, Faithful to Nature or Takealot items "sold by Takealot". Be careful with third-party marketplace sellers you cannot identify.
2. The price. Compare against known listings. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 900 g is R1 150 at Dis-Chem Living Fit, and Myprotein Impact 1 kg is R1 300. A tub of either at half that price needs an explanation. Cheap local tubs do exist (Black Bull 908 g at R259 to R319, Nutritech Heavy Duty at R329), so low price alone is not proof of a fake.
3. Seal and packaging. An intact outer seal, even printing and a matching lid. Optimum Nutrition tells buyers to check the rim seal has not been tampered with.
4. Batch code and dates. A clear inkjet batch code with manufacture and expiry dates. Optimum Nutrition says dates should be about two years apart for powders. Smudged, missing or scratched codes are a red flag.
5. South African label details. Foodstuff labels must carry the product name, ingredient list, allergens, net quantity in metric units, importer or manufacturer name and SA address, country of origin, batch number and date marking (R146). A tub with none of these is suspect.
6. Nutrition table. A plausible protein figure per 100 g and per serving: roughly 85 to 90 g per 100 g for isolate and 70 to 80 g for concentrate.
7. Third-party claims. If a tub claims Informed Sport or Informed Choice, check the batch on the certifier's own site. "SAIDS approved" or "WADA approved" is always false: SAIDS does not certify any supplement.

Is a low-protein tub the same as a fake?

No, but it is a related problem. A University of Pretoria study of 70 South African high-protein supplements found measured protein differed significantly from the label in 68.6%, and five held 42% to 80% less protein than claimed. A separate SA study of 15 best-selling wheys found 9 failed draft amino-acid criteria, consistent with amino spiking (what amino spiking is). Brands were not named in either case. A genuine product can still be poorly made.

What do you do if you suspect a fake?

• Stop using it and keep the tub, the batch code and your receipt.
• Contact the brand: Optimum Nutrition directs buyers to its "Need help?" form; we found no public ON page for reporting fakes.
• Report the retailer to the platform and, under section 41 of the Consumer Protection Act (false or misleading representations), lodge a complaint with the National Consumer Commission.
• If you are a drug-tested athlete, tell SAIDS and your doctor if you have used the product.

What do fake powders risk?

Beyond wasted money, counterfeit or unverified powders can contain the wrong ingredients, contaminants or undeclared substances. International studies found 14.8% of 634 non-hormonal supplements contained undeclared anabolic steroids (Geyer, 2004). That is a particular concern for school and club athletes.
