It depends on whether you value a clean ingredient list or the lowest price. Real vanilla in a whey tub is unusual in South Africa: most flavoured whey uses a flavour system plus sweeteners. In October 2026, ATP Fitness's Madagascan Vanilla Whey Isolate is the one we found whose shop page lists whey isolate "naturally flavoured with Madagascan vanilla" and no sweetener.
How do the vanilla options compare?
| Product | Price (October 2026) | Per 100 g powder | Sweetener |
|---|
| ATP Fitness Madagascan Vanilla Isolate 800 g | R950 (ATP shop) | R118.75 | none |
| ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla Isolate 800 g (18 servings) | R1 050 (ATP shop) | R131.25 | none |
| USN BlueLab 100% Whey 1 kg (15 flavours) | R689 (USN shop) | R68.90 | not stated in page text |
| NPL Platinum Whey 908 g | R700 (NPL shop) | R77.09 | sucralose |
| Biogen Complete Whey 875 g | R460–R470 (Biogen shop) | R53.71 | sucralose |
We could not confirm that a vanilla flavour is stocked for each non-ATP product at every retailer, so check the flavour list before you buy. Per 100 g of powder is not per gram of protein: isolates carry more protein per gram than blends, and ATP does not publish protein per serving. For the per-protein maths on the others, see the per 30 g protein comparison.
Why does real vanilla matter?
Real vanilla gives a mild, creamy flavour and avoids artificial flavouring, but it also tastes less sweet than a sucralose-sweetened tub. R146 restricts how the word "natural" may be used, so read the ingredient list, not just the front label. If you are sweetness-sensitive, an unsweetened vanilla isolate tastes closer to a lightly sweet vanilla milk than a milkshake. Many people add a banana, cinnamon or a little honey.
What are the honest ATP trade-offs?
ATP's vanilla isolates cost about R119–R131 per 100 g of powder, the highest in the table; they have a short flavour range; they taste less sweet; the brand dates from 2024; and no third-party sport certification is published. The R1 050 grass-fed option works out at about R58 per serving at 18 servings a tub. USN BlueLab and NPL Platinum Whey are the credible value alternatives, with the trade-off of added flavour systems and, for NPL, sucralose.
How do you pick?
- Decide whether sweeteners matter to you. If they do, see cleanest whey without sweeteners.
- Decide on budget and compare per protein, not per tub.
- Taste before you commit: try a small tub or sample.
- Check best tasting whey and the clean-label protein ranking, and the best whey isolate page for more.
