Three causes cover most cases: lactose, the sweetener system, and the size or speed of the serving. Evidence here is mechanistic and practical; there are few trials on bloating from sports whey, so treat the fixes below as trial-and-error steps.
Is it the lactose?
Whey concentrate typically contains roughly 3–8% lactose (it varies, so check the spec sheet); isolate is usually under about 1%. A 30 g scoop of concentrate therefore carries roughly 1–2.5 g of lactose, which many people tolerate and lactose-sensitive people notice. Mixing with 250 ml of milk adds about 12 g more. Lactose-free does not mean milk-protein-free, so none of this applies to a true milk allergy.
Is it the sweeteners?
Local flavoured whey leans on sucralose (NPL, Primal, Biogen Complete Whey, Tony Ferguson, Myprotein), PVM uses cyclamate and saccharin, and bars use maltitol and sorbitol, with laxative warnings on the Dis-Chem pages for Barebells and NPL's 21 bar. Sugar alcohols (maltitol, sorbitol, erythritol) are the better-established gut irritants; sucralose is a less certain culprit, though some people notice a difference.
Is it the dose?
Per-meal protein of about 20–40 g is the usual range (ISSN). Gulping 50–60 g, or taking a mass-gainer serving of 226–350 g, brings more gas and fullness.
What fixes it?
| Step | What to do | South African example |
|---|
| 1 | Drop to 20–30 g and sip over 10 minutes | any scoop, halved |
| 2 | Switch concentrate to isolate | USN Isozero 805 g R899; ATP Unflavoured Isolate R900 (R699 on Takealot, undated PriceCheck snapshot) |
| 3 | Remove sweeteners | ATP unsweetened range; Lifestyle Food concentrate R500 (still concentrate, so lactose remains) |
| 4 | Use water, not milk | see water or milk |
Change one thing for a week at a time. Its isolates are single-ingredient and unsweetened, but they taste plain, no third-party certification is published, and the unflavoured isolate showed out of stock on its shop on 27 October 2026. USN Isozero is a credible flavoured alternative; its sweeteners are not named in the page text.
When is it not simple bloating?
Hives, swelling, wheeze or vomiting after whey can signal a cow's-milk allergy, so stop and seek medical help. See a doctor for blood in the stool, weight loss, night-time pain or bloating that continues after you remove whey.
