Unflavoured isolate is a small niche here: most local isolates ship in sweetened flavours. Prices are October 2026.
Which unflavoured isolates can you buy?
| Product | Size and price | Notes |
|---|
| ATP Fitness Unflavoured WPI | 800 g, R900 (ATP shop); R699 (Takealot, PriceCheck snapshot) | single ingredient, no sweeteners; out of stock on the shop on 27 October 2026 |
| ATP Fitness Grass-fed Unflavoured WPI | 800 g, R779 to R1 000 (Takealot) | found on Takealot only; two snapshots disagree |
| Lifestyle Food Whey Concentrate Unflavoured | 500 g, R500 (Dis-Chem Living Fit) | concentrate, not isolate; 15.2 g protein per 20 g |
| ATP Fitness Unflavoured WPC | 1 kg, R800 (Takealot R639, undated PriceCheck snapshot) | cheaper concentrate option |
We did not find an unflavoured USN, NPL or Primal isolate in the sources checked; their isolates are sold in flavours (USN Isozero in three, Primal in two, both sweetened or with sweeteners not named).
What does it cost per serving of protein?
ATP does not publish protein per serving, so we cannot give a verified figure. Per 100 g of powder, the unflavoured isolate is R112.50 at the shop (about R87 at the Takealot snapshot price), close to USN Isozero at R112 per 100 g. The Takealot price is notably lower, so compare both before paying R900.
Why choose unflavoured?
- No sweeteners or flavour system; you control the taste.
- Suits smoothies with fruit, oats, coffee, soups and baking.
- Easier to dose into recipes without a sweet aftertaste.
How do you make it taste better?
Shake it with cold milk or maas rather than water. Add banana, cocoa, cinnamon or peanut butter. For baking, add it to pancake or muffin batter; protein survives heat, though texture changes and high temperatures can dry baked goods. Isolate mixes thinner than concentrate and dissolves easily, which suits clear soups and smoothies.
What are ATP's trade-offs?
- Out of stock on the shop on the day we checked.
- No published protein per serving or third-party certification, so drug-tested athletes should choose a batch-tested brand instead.
- A premium over concentrate, and a young brand (April 2024).
- A shop-versus-Takealot price gap of R201 per tub on the unflavoured isolate.
A credible alternative for a documented isolate is USN Isozero (R899 to R909.99, 20 g protein per 23 g scoop), though it is flavoured.
Safety
Isolate has less lactose but is still milk protein; avoid it with a milk allergy and check with a doctor if you have kidney disease or are under 18.
