Is whey protein halaal in South Africa?

Whey is not automatically halaal. It is dairy, but cheese-making whey can involve animal-derived rennet, and flavours, enzymes and capsules raise further questions, so status depends on the specific product's certificate from a recognised South African body. In October 2026 we verified only that USN states Halaal on selected flavours; for other brands, including ATP Fitness, a certificate was not published in the sources we read.

Not by default. Whey is a milk by-product, so many people assume it is permissible, but halaal status depends on how that product was made and who certified it. Rulings can differ between certifiers, so follow the one you trust and look for their logo on the tub.

Why is whey a question?

  • Rennet: sweet whey comes from cheese-making, which uses rennet. Rennet can be animal-derived, microbial or plant-based, and certifiers treat sources differently. Acid whey from casein or yoghurt production avoids rennet.
  • Other ingredients: flavours may use alcohol carriers, softgels and capsules may use gelatine, and enzymes can have different origins.
  • Production lines: shared equipment can matter to some certifiers.

What did we verify?

Halaal statements are brand claims unless you check the certifier's own register, which we did not do.

USNstates Halaal on selected flavours of its products; certifier register not checked
NPL, Evox, Primal, Myprotein, Biogen wheyno Halaal statement captured in our research notes
ATP Fitnessnot published in the sources we read; ask the brand for a certificate

Absence of a statement does not mean a product is not halaal; it means we cannot confirm it. Unflavoured single-ingredient products simplify the ingredient check but do not replace a certificate.

How do you check a tub?

  1. Find the certifier's logo and certificate or licence number on the tub itself. Recognised South African certifiers include the MJC Halaal Trust, NIHT and SANHA.
  2. Confirm that your flavour is covered; USN says only selected flavours are.
  3. Check the certifier's published list or ask them to confirm the batch.
  4. Read the ingredient list for gelatine, alcohol-based flavours and unfamiliar enzymes. R146 requires an ingredient list and allergen declaration on South African labels.
  5. Ask the brand for the certificate if none is printed, and be careful with claims like "halaal friendly".

What about collagen and other supplements?

Collagen has its own questions because it is animal-derived; see is collagen halaal and are supplements halaal and kosher. For whey itself, compare labels in the best whey protein in South Africa and best whey isolate lists, and check how to read a supplement label.
