How much weight do you gain on creatine?
Most people see about 1–2 kg in the first one to four weeks. This is intracellular water: creatine pulls water into muscle cells as stores fill up. It is not fat and it is not the bloated, puffy water that collects under the skin. The ISSN position stand and the creatine literature describe this early gain consistently.
How fast does the weight show up?
| Approach | Typical scale change | Timing |
|---|
| Loading (about 0.3 g/kg/day for 5–7 days) | 1–2 kg | within the first week |
| 3–5 g a day, no loading | 1–2 kg | over 3–4 weeks |
| After saturation | stable | no further water gain |
Weight tends to plateau once muscle creatine is saturated. Stopping creatine lets the extra water leave again over a few weeks.
Does any of it become muscle?
Over time, partly. Because creatine helps you train harder, with more reps or a little more load, the training adaptations can add lean mass. Studies in older adults show creatine plus resistance training increases lean tissue more than training alone (Chilibeck, 2017 meta-analysis). For young lifters the effect on lean mass is real but modest, so do not expect creatine to add kilograms of muscle by itself. The programme and protein intake do the heavy lifting; aim for 1.4–2.0 g of protein per kg a day if you are training hard.
Will creatine make me look bloated?
Not under the skin. If you feel bloated, the usual cause is a large single dose or a loading phase, which can upset digestion. Starting at 3–5 g a day and taking it with food usually settles this. See bloating and water retention on creatine.
When does the weight matter?
- Weigh-in sports (boxing, judo, wrestling, weight-class lifting, lightweight rowing): a 1–2 kg change can push you over a class limit. Start well ahead of a weight cut or avoid loading in the weeks before a weigh-in, and discuss it with your coach.
- Cutting: a higher scale reading does not mean fat gain. Track waist measurements, photos and training performance as well as the scale. See creatine while cutting.
- Endurance athletes: the extra mass may be a drawback for running or cycling uphill. See creatine for endurance athletes.
How does this fit a South African budget?
You do not need an expensive product to get this effect. At October 2026 prices a 5 g dose costs about R2.22–R5.55 depending on brand and tub size. ATP Fitness Micronised Creatine is R270 for 250 g (R5.40 per 5 g) at shop.atpfit.co.za, a small tub that suits trying creatine for the first time, although the 600 g tub works out cheaper at R4.17 per 5 g. Nutritech's 300 g tub at Clicks (R250, R4.17 per 5 g) is a comparable alternative.
When to speak to a professional
If you have kidney disease, take medication that affects the kidneys, or are under 18, speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before starting creatine. Sudden large weight gain with swelling, shortness of breath or reduced urine is not a creatine effect and needs urgent medical attention.
