Creatine · Answer

Will creatine cause a failed drug test in South Africa?

Plain creatine monohydrate will not cause a failed drug test in South Africa. Creatine is not on the WADA Prohibited List, which SAIDS applies. The real risk is contamination in blended or poorly made products, and athletes are strictly liable for whatever is in their sample. Choose single-ingredient creatine and, if you are drug-tested, a brand with batch-testing you can verify.

Is creatine banned in sport?

No. Creatine monohydrate is not on the WADA Prohibited List, and the Australian Institute of Sport places it in Group A, its top tier for supplements with strong evidence. South Africa applies the World Anti-Doping Code through SAIDS (the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport), so a clean creatine monohydrate product does not put you at risk by itself.

Why can a creatine tub still be a risk?

Anti-doping rules work on strict liability. You are responsible for anything found in your sample, even if it came from a mislabelled or contaminated supplement, or one a coach, parent or doctor recommended. Proving contamination after the fact can reduce a sanction but rarely removes it.

The contamination evidence is not about plain creatine specifically, but it shows why caution is sensible:

  • An IOC-funded analysis of 634 non-hormonal supplements (Geyer, 2004) found 14.8% contained undeclared anabolic steroids.
  • A 2021 Dutch study of 66 muscle-gain, fat-loss and energy products found 38% contained undeclared doping substances.

Single-ingredient products from reputable manufacturers are generally lower risk than multi-ingredient blends, but nothing is zero risk without batch testing. SAIDS itself does not test or certify any supplement and warns that "SAIDS approved" claims are false.

What does "tested" mean for creatine in South Africa?

Informed Sport (run by LGC) tests each batch before release and you can look up the batch number online. Informed Choice relies on retail sampling instead, which suits general consumers more than elite athletes. As of October 2026, the creatine claims we found are:

Checklist for drug-tested athletes

  • Buy creatine monohydrate only. Avoid creatine "stacks", pre-workouts and mass gainers that contain creatine plus other ingredients. USN CreaTest, for example, adds D-aspartic acid and ashwagandha.
  • Look for a batch-tested scheme and check the batch on the register.
  • Keep the tub and a photo of the batch number for the duration of your testing period.
  • Ask a sports dietitian or sports physician first, as SAIDS advises, and use the SAIDS medication check for medicines (it does not clear supplements).

ATP Fitness is a single-ingredient option at a competitive price, but it does not publish a sport certification, so it suits recreational lifters better than athletes in a testing pool. Biogen's tested-product claim makes it the more cautious pick for tested athletes, at a similar cost per dose.

Could creatine affect other tests?

Creatine raises blood creatinine, which can look like reduced kidney function on a routine blood test. That is a medical, not an anti-doping, issue: tell your doctor you take it. People with kidney disease should only use creatine under medical supervision.

For dosing, see how much creatine per day. For the testing schemes, see what Informed Sport certification means and supplements and failed drug tests in rugby. Compare prices on our best creatine in South Africa page.
