Creatine · Answer

Does creatine expire?

Yes, every creatine tub has a best-before date, but dry creatine monohydrate powder is very stable and is usually fine for a while past it if it has been kept sealed, cool and dry. It degrades quickly only when dissolved in liquid. Throw it away if it is damp, clumped hard, discoloured or smells off.

Does creatine go off?

Dry creatine monohydrate is one of the most stable supplements. As a powder it holds up well at room temperature, so it does not spoil quickly the way protein shakes or fats do. South African labelling rules (R146) still require a batch number and date marking, and that date is the manufacturer's quality guarantee. Past it, the product may be fine, but the maker no longer stands behind it.

What changes in creatine over time?

In solution, creatine slowly converts to creatinine, a waste product with no performance benefit, and the rate rises in warm, acidic drinks. In dry powder this conversion barely happens, which is why a sealed tub keeps well. The usual enemy of an old tub is moisture, not time.

ConditionEffect on creatine powder
Sealed, cool, dryStable well past the stated date
Open tub, scoop left in, humid kitchenClumping, risk of moisture spoilage
Mixed in liquidGradual loss to creatinine; drink fresh
Hot car or sunny windowsillBad for the packaging and product quality

How should you store creatine in South Africa?

Keep the lid tight, use a dry scoop, and store it in a cupboard rather than on a sunny kitchen counter. In coastal humid areas such as Durban and Cape Town's winter damp, clumping is the problem to watch for. Drop a silica gel sachet in the tub if your climate is humid. Our guide on storing creatine in South African heat covers more detail.

When should you throw it away?

  • The powder is clumped into hard lumps or has gone damp
  • You see mould or discolouration
  • It smells unusual (pure creatine is close to odourless)
  • The tub was left in a hot car for long periods
  • The seal was broken when you bought it

If any of these apply, replace it. A few R of creatine is not worth risking your stomach, and it is also a basic check against fake or diluted creatine.

Is expired creatine dangerous?

There is no evidence that out-of-date, dry, properly stored creatine monohydrate is toxic, but there is also no safety data on contaminated or moist product. Treat the date as a quality marker. For athletes who are drug-tested, a tub past its date or of unknown storage history is not worth the risk, because you can no longer rely on the batch record.

Does creatine in solution expire?

Yes, on a much faster timescale. Mix each serving fresh and drink it within minutes to a couple of hours. Avoid leaving a creatine drink in a hot car for a day. See how to mix creatine.

How long will a tub last, and does buying big make sense?

A 600 g tub gives 120 servings at 5 g, about four months at one dose a day. ATP Fitness Micronised Creatine is R500 for 600 g (R4.17 per 5 g) and R270 for 250 g (R5.40 per 5 g) at shop.atpfit.co.za, as of October 2026. Larger tubs cost less per dose, but only buy big if you will finish it well before the date and you can store it dry. If you are not sure you will keep taking it, the 250 g tub is the safer buy. Biogen's 500 g (R445, Dis-Chem) is a credible alternative.
