Collagen · Answer

Do vegan collagen boosters work?

Vegan collagen boosters cannot contain collagen, because collagen is an animal protein. They usually supply vitamin C, amino acids, silica or plant extracts that your body may use to make its own. Evidence that they raise skin or joint collagen in people who already eat enough protein and vitamin C is thin. In South Africa, save your money and fix the basics.

What is a "vegan collagen booster"?

No plant contains collagen. Products sold as vegan collagen, "collagen builders" or "collagen boosters" combine nutrients thought to help your body make its own: vitamin C, amino acids such as glycine, proline and lysine, silica, hyaluronic acid or botanical extracts. Some newer products use collagen-like proteins produced by fermentation; we did not find any in our South African retail research.

Does the logic hold?

Partly. Your body builds collagen from amino acids, using vitamin C, copper and zinc as co-factors. A deficiency in any of these, or in protein overall, will impair collagen formation. But in people who eat enough protein and fruit and vegetables, extra "booster" nutrients are unlikely to increase collagen further. We found no robust trial showing that a plant-based blend raises skin or joint collagen in well-nourished adults, so evidence is thin. Be sceptical of any claim to "rebuild" collagen. Under South African law, medicinal and therapeutic claims on foods are prohibited (R146), and the Consumer Protection Act bans misleading claims.

What actually matters for collagen if you eat plants?

For plant-based protein needs, see the best plant protein in South Africa. As of October 2026 Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate 650 g costs R148 to R185 (about R28.46 per 100 g), and USN BlueLab Plant Protein 900 g costs R399 to R474.99 at Dis-Chem Living Fit (about R52.78 per 100 g).

Are animal collagen supplements better?

Not proven either. Collagen peptides have emerging evidence (AIS Group B), but a 2025 meta-analysis of 23 trials found skin benefits disappeared in higher-quality, non-industry-funded trials, so even animal collagen is uncertain. If you are vegan, the honest conclusion is that you are not missing a proven supplement. See does collagen actually work and vegan collagen alternatives.

When might a booster be reasonable?

  • You have a low vitamin C intake and want an easy top-up; a plain vitamin C source is cheaper than a branded blend.
  • You like the product and understand it is not collagen.

Avoid products with undeclared "proprietary blends", megadoses of vitamin C (above about 2 000 mg a day often causes diarrhoea) or herbs that could interact with medicines.

If you eat animal products

ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen is bovine and therefore not vegan; it costs R10.44 per 10 g in the 910 g tub (R950, ATP shop, October 2026) and has no published third-party certificate; The Harvest Table Bovine 800 g (R909, Faithful to Nature) is a close alternative at R11.36 per 10 g. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, under-18s, people with kidney disease and people on medication should speak to a doctor before using botanical blends.
