Collagen · Answer

Can you put collagen in hot coffee?

Yes. Hydrolysed collagen peptides dissolve readily in hot coffee or tea, and normal drinking temperatures do not meaningfully harm them because they are already broken into small peptides. Stir 10 g into a little hot liquid first to avoid clumps. This is a practical tip, not a proven benefit, and collagen powders in South Africa differ in taste.

Does heat destroy collagen peptides?

Hydrolysed collagen has already been broken down by enzymes into short peptides and amino acids before it reaches the tub. That is why it dissolves in cold water and, unlike gelatine, does not set into a jelly. Normal drinking temperatures are not a known problem for an already-hydrolysed protein, and we found no evidence in our research that normal drinking temperatures reduce the amino acid content or the usefulness of collagen peptides. We have not found a trial testing collagen in coffee specifically, so this rests on how hydrolysed protein behaves rather than on a coffee study.

How do I stop it clumping?

  • Put the 10 g scoop into the empty mug first.
  • Add about 50 ml of hot (not boiling) liquid and stir to a paste.
  • Pour in the rest of the coffee and stir again.
  • Alternatively, use a small handheld frother. Unflavoured bovine collagen is close to neutral in taste, while flavoured and marine products can change the flavour.

If you add milk, the extra protein is a bonus; if you add collagen to a very hot, black americano, expect a slight savoury note in some brands.

Timing, caffeine and iron

Coffee is a fine delivery vehicle but there are two caveats:

  1. Iron absorption: coffee and tea reduce non-haem iron absorption. If you are taking iron tablets or have low ferritin, keep them away from your coffee (iron guidance). Collagen itself is not an iron issue.
  2. Tendon protocol: if you are following the pre-exercise tendon protocol (10 to 15 g with about 50 mg vitamin C, 30 to 60 minutes before loading), take it with a vitamin C source such as orange juice rather than coffee (details). For skin and general use, timing does not matter (best time to take collagen).

What does collagen in your coffee cost?

At October 2026 prices, a 10 g scoop of ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen is R10.44 from the 910 g tub (R950, ATP shop). The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen 800 g refill is R11.36 (R909, Faithful to Nature). Collagen creamers cost more: Noa & Co Collagen Creamer Vanilla 350 g is R749, about R21.40 per 10 g (Faithful to Nature, October 2026), though it also contains other ingredients. An honest ATP trade-off for coffee drinkers: it is unflavoured, so it adds no taste or sweetness, and no sweetened or "creamer" version exists in its range.

Check the label: some collagen coffee products are blends with creamers, sweeteners and extra additives. If you want the simplest option, a single-ingredient powder and your usual milk does the job.

What collagen in coffee will not do

It will not make your coffee a protein meal: collagen lacks tryptophan and is low in leucine, so it is not a replacement for whey or food protein (is collagen a complete protein). For the dose and evidence, see how much collagen per day.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, under-18s, and anyone on medication or with kidney disease, should check with a doctor before starting any collagen product.
