Collagen · Answer

Marine vs bovine collagen: which is better in South Africa?

Neither is proven better: both are mainly type I collagen and there is no strong head-to-head evidence. Choose on allergy, diet, price and source. In South Africa bovine powders cost about R10.44–R17.68 per 10 g, while the one marine powder we priced, Sir Francis, is about R20.50 per 10 g (October 2026). Avoid marine collagen with a fish allergy.

Which is better, marine or bovine collagen?

Neither has been shown to beat the other. Bovine collagen is mainly type I and III; marine collagen is mainly type I. Both are hydrolysed into peptides that are digested to amino acids and small peptides, and evidence for either is emerging: the AIS lists collagen in Group B. A claim that marine collagen is "proven superior" is not supported by strong head-to-head trials.

Check halaal or kosher certification if you need it. Several bovine listings state Halaal (The Harvest Table, Be Bright, Biogen); we did not verify certifiers.

What does marine collagen cost in South Africa?

Marine powder is scarce locally. Sir Francis Marine Collagen is listed from R164 at Faithful to Nature, which we map to the 80 g pack, about R20.50 per 10 g (the size mapping is unconfirmed and the pack may be out of stock). That is roughly 48% above the median collagen powder price we found (about R13.89 per 10 g). Marine also appears as capsules and tablets, such as New Leaf Marine Collagen (60 tablets, R399), where collagen per tablet is unclear, and as part of blends: Beauty Gen Naked Complete contains 10% fish collagen, and The Harvest Table Multi Collagen combines bovine, marine and chicken sources.

What about ATP Fitness?

ATP's Hydrolysed Collagen is bovine, single-ingredient, 10 g per scoop, and R10.44 per 10 g for the 910 g tub, the lowest price we found. Trade-offs: it is not suitable if you avoid beef, ATP is a young brand (est. 2024), and halaal status and third-party testing are not published. The Harvest Table Bovine (R11.36 per 10 g) is a credible alternative.

So which should you choose?

  1. Fish allergy or avoid fish: bovine.
  2. Avoid beef for dietary or religious reasons: marine, accepting a higher price and fewer choices.
  3. Value: bovine powder.
  4. Tendon or skin goals: the same doses apply either way; see how much collagen per day.
