Is DMAA banned in South Africa and sport?

In sport, yes: DMAA (methylhexanamine) has been on the WADA Prohibited List since 2010 and is currently listed as a specified stimulant, banned in competition; SAIDS applies that list. Whether it is legally restricted in South African shops is something we could not confirm. Avoid any product that lists it or its aliases, and treat unexplained stimulants as a doping risk.

Is DMAA banned in sport?

Yes. DMAA, also called methylhexanamine or 1,3-dimethylamylamine, was added to the WADA Prohibited List in 2010. It is currently listed under specified stimulants (S6.b) and is prohibited in competition. Sanctions depend on the case, so do not assume a positive test will be treated leniently. South Africa applies the World Anti-Doping Code through SAIDS, and athletes are strictly liable for anything in their sample.

Is DMAA legal to sell in South Africa?

We could not confirm this. We did not find a current SAHPRA notice scheduling or banning DMAA, and we did not find a 2026 SAHPRA recall of DMAA or DMHA pre-workouts. We did find a 2025 SAIDS advisory on a close relative: a WADA-accredited laboratory found undeclared 5-methylhexan-2-amine (1,4-DMAA, often sold as DMHA) in samples of a pre-workout, and SAIDS warned that supplement manufacturing is not regulated in South Africa. A News24 headline dated 27 November 2015 reports that Dis-Chem pulled the pre-workout Jack3d from shelves; we could not read the article and do not state the reason. Treat the retail position as unsettled and the sporting position as clear.

In other jurisdictions, DMAA has remained in some dietary supplements even though it is banned in sport, which is part of why it is a doping risk.

What other names does DMAA go by?

Labels do not always say "DMAA". Known aliases include:

  • Methylhexanamine
  • 1,3-dimethylamylamine
  • 1,3-dimethylpentylamine
  • 4-methylhexan-2-amine
  • 2-amino-4-methylhexane
  • Brand names such as Geranamine, Forthane and Floradrene

Because the substance can be hard to spot, anti-doping bodies advise athletes to avoid stimulant blends altogether.

Why is DMAA considered risky?

Case reports have suggested a link to cerebral haemorrhage, and it is less studied than caffeine. As a stimulant it can raise blood pressure and heart rate, especially when mixed with caffeine. The AIS puts DMAA, DMBA, synephrine (bitter orange) and ephedrine in Group D, meaning banned or high contamination risk. A 2021 Dutch analysis of 66 supplements for muscle gain, fat loss and energy found that 38% contained undeclared doping substances, including DMAA, oxilofrine and BMPEA.

How do you avoid it?

  1. Read the full label, including unfamiliar chemical names, and avoid any "proprietary blend" where the ingredients are hidden. See what a proprietary blend is.
  2. Prefer transparent products that publish every dose. Biogen Premium Pre-Workout states 150 mg of caffeine plus named doses and a claim of Informed Sport batch testing (a seller claim; verify the batch on the Informed Sport register).
  3. Be wary of "extreme", "fat-burning" and "hardcore" stimulant products. SAIDS flags weight-loss and muscle-building products as the highest-risk categories.
  4. Use stimulant-free options if you are in a testing pool. USN Qhush Hyperdrive Caffeine Free is listed at R309.95–R349.99.
  5. Speak to a sports dietitian or physician, as SAIDS advises, and keep the tub and batch number.

What if you feel unwell?

Stop the product. Chest pain, severe headache, confusion or a racing heartbeat need urgent care: call 10177 or 112 and take the tub with you.
