Is biltong a good high-protein snack for weight loss in South Africa?

Yes, with a caveat on salt. One user-entered Woolworths biltong listing shows 44 g of protein per 100 g (244 kcal), so about 68 g would give 30 g of protein for around 166 kcal; brands vary. It has almost no carbohydrate, but it is cured with salt, so check the label if you watch sodium or blood pressure.

How much protein is in biltong?

Biltong is dried, cured beef, so the water is gone and the protein is concentrated. One Woolworths biltong listing on the South African FatSecret database shows, per 100 g: about 244 kcal, 44 g protein, 7 g fat and 1 g carbohydrate. That database is user-entered and brands differ, so use the nutrition table on your own pack. Fattier cuts and droëwors are usually higher in calories.

Working from the 44 g figure:

  • 30 g of protein needs about 68 g of biltong, which is roughly 166 kcal.
  • A 40 g snack bag gives about 18 g of protein and around 98 kcal.

That makes biltong a calorie-efficient protein source compared with most cheese, nuts or sweetened bars.

How does biltong compare with bars and whey?

Protein bars are convenient but cost more per gram of protein, and several local bars use sugar alcohols (maltitol, sorbitol) that can cause bloating or loose stools in some people. See best protein bars in South Africa.

What is the downside of biltong?

  • Sodium. Curing relies on salt, vinegar and spices. The listing we checked did not show sodium, so read the label. The World Health Organization advises adults to keep salt below about 5 g (2 g sodium) a day; a few handfuls of biltong can use up a large share of that. People with high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease should limit it.
  • Processed meat. Cured and dried meat is a processed food. Enjoy it as one of several protein sources, not the only one.
  • Calorie creep. It is easy to eat 150 g in front of the TV, which is about 366 kcal on the listing above.
  • Quality varies. Moisture, fat and spice content differ between brands and a "high protein" claim must still match the nutrition table.

How to use biltong for weight loss

  1. Pre-portion it into 30–40 g servings.
  2. Pair it with fruit or raw vegetables, which add fibre and volume.
  3. Choose lean, sliced beef biltong rather than fatty strips or droëwors if you are counting calories.
  4. Count it towards your daily protein target of about 1.6–2.0 g/kg (how much protein to lose fat).
  5. Drink water; salty snacks raise thirst.

A whey shake still wins on cost and calories per 30 g protein (do protein shakes help you lose weight), while biltong wins on satisfaction and needs no mixing. Both can sit in the same plan.
