Why we are not naming a "best" meal replacement
Healthnews24 ranks products only when we have verified labels. For this round we checked whey, plant protein, mass gainers, bars and recovery drinks, but not the nutrition panels of dedicated meal-replacement shakes from weight-management brands. Any ranking we gave would be guesswork, so here is how to judge one yourself, plus a benchmark you can beat or match.
What should a meal replacement contain?
A shake that replaces a meal needs more than protein powder in water. Use this checklist against the nutrition table:
| Check | Target for one serving | Why |
|---|
| Energy | about 250–400 kcal | a real meal, but still a deficit |
| Protein | 20–30 g | fullness and muscle retention |
| Fibre | 3–5 g or more | slows hunger |
| Added sugar | as low as possible | sugar adds calories without fullness |
| Vitamins and minerals | listed, with amounts | otherwise it is just a protein shake |
| Sweeteners | note type | some people react to sugar alcohols |
Also look at the price per serving, not per tub. Under South African labelling law (R146, in force as of October 2026) a label may not claim to provide complete or balanced nutrition, so a pack that says it replaces all your meals should make you cautious. Use shakes for one meal a day, not three, unless a doctor or dietitian has prescribed a plan.
What is a cheap benchmark?
A home-made shake is easy to cost:
- 30 g whey costs about R14.70 for NPL Platinum Whey Plus (R490 per kg, NPL shop), R25 for Tony Ferguson Whey (840 g at R700, Dis-Chem Living Fit), or R24 for ATP Fitness Unflavoured WPC (R800 per kg on shop.atpfit.co.za), all as of October 2026.
- Add 250 ml milk, 40 g oats and a piece of fruit for fibre and energy. That lands near 350–400 kcal with 30+ g of protein.
ATP's powder has no sweeteners or flavour, which suits people who want to control what goes in, but it tastes plain and does not publish protein per serving. NPL's blend and Tony Ferguson's whey are sweetened with sucralose. See our best whey protein comparison.
Who should avoid meal replacements?
Speak to a doctor or registered dietitian first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, diabetic or on glucose-lowering medicines, have kidney disease, or have a history of disordered eating. Replacing meals for long periods can lead to low fibre and micronutrient intake and does not teach you the eating habits that keep weight off.
What about ready-to-drink shakes?
Convenient, but check protein per rand: bottled shakes usually cost several times more per 30 g of protein than a tub. See best ready-to-drink protein shakes and do protein shakes help you lose weight. When we verify specific meal-replacement labels, this answer will be updated.
