What makes an online source safe?
Three things: a traceable seller, a product that came through the brand's normal supply chain, and a label you can check. None of these guarantees quality, but each reduces the chance of counterfeit, expired or heat-damaged stock.
Which sources are lower risk?
| Source | Examples | Why |
|---|
| Brand shops | USN, NPL, Biogen, PVM, ATP Fitness (shop.atpfit.co.za) | Direct from the manufacturer; prices often mirror Dis-Chem (Biogen's shop matches Dis-Chem Living Fit to the cent) |
| Pharmacy and health retailers | Dis-Chem Living Fit, Clicks, Faithful to Nature, Wellness Warehouse | Buy from brands or distributors; carry local importer details |
| Takealot, sold by Takealot | Many brands including ATP | Retailer-fulfilled; check the "sold by" line |
| Takealot third-party sellers | Various | Quality depends on the seller |
ATP Fitness is listed here as one brand shop alongside the others.
What are the warning signs?
- Price far below the market. The cheapest branded whey tubs we found in October 2026 were Black Bull Whey Supreme 908 g at R259-R319 (Clicks); a 900 g "unbranded" whey listing at R195 on Takealot had no nutrition information in the data we captured. That is a reason to check, not proof of a problem.
- No brand, no ingredient list or nutrition table in the listing.
- No South African importer or manufacturer address on the label photos.
- Foreign-language or stickered labels on products that should be local.
- Claims such as "FDA approved" or "WADA certified" with no certificate.
- A seller with no history, or an off-platform request for payment.

What should you check when the parcel arrives?
- Tamper seal intact; lid not loosened.
- Batch number and expiry printed (not just stickered).
- Powder colour, smell and texture normal; no clumps.
- Net weight matches the label.
- Importer or manufacturer name and SA address.
Keep the packaging and your proof of purchase. If you suspect a fake, contact the brand and the retailer, then the National Consumer Commission under the Consumer Protection Act (section 41 covers misleading representations). For side effects, see how to report a supplement side effect.
What about price?
Online prices swing. Takealot has undercut ATP Fitness's own shop on several products (unflavoured isolate R699 versus R900 in an undated PriceCheck snapshot, checked October 2026), while brand shops usually match Dis-Chem. For examples of local brand-shop prices, USN BlueLab Whey 1 kg is R689 (USN shop), Biogen Iso Whey Premium 750 g R765 (Biogen shop) and NPL Platinum Whey Plus 1 kg R490 (NPL shop).
