What is the best beta-alanine in South Africa?

Beta-alanine has strong evidence for efforts lasting roughly 1–4 minutes at 4–6 g a day. In South Africa the cheapest plain powders are My Whey 250 g (R195, Takealot) and USN 205 g (R160), both R2.50 per 3.2 g (October 2026). ATP Fitness 200 g (R260) costs R4.16 per 3.2 g but is a pure, unsweetened single ingredient.

Beta-alanine raises muscle carnosine, an acid buffer, and works by weeks of loading rather than a pre-workout hit. The ISSN position stand backs 4–6 g a day, and the AIS places it in Group A. Because plain powders are all the same molecule, we rank on price per 3.2 g (a common trial dose) and what the label tells you. Prices are as of October 2026.

ATP Fitness Beta-Alanine 200 gR260 (ATP shop)R4.16R5.20–R7.80

At those daily doses a month costs about R94–R140 with My Whey or USN and R156–R234 with ATP. Capsule options such as Applied Nutrition Beta Alanine 1500 (120 capsules, R149 on Takealot) and Nutritech Beta Alanine (120 capsules, R209) are not comparable, because we could not verify the milligrams per capsule.

How does ATP Fitness Beta-Alanine compare?

ATP Fitness sells beta-alanine as a single ingredient with no sweeteners or flavouring. That is its strength for people who want no additives. Its trade-offs: it is about 66% dearer per gram than My Whey or USN, ATP is a young brand (est. April 2024), and serving size and third-party sport certification are not published. USN's plain powder is the credible lower-cost alternative; its Cola and Apple variants are flavoured and their sweeteners are not stated, so buy unflavoured.

What should you check on the label?

  • Dose per serving. Biogen's page suggests about 1 g per serving with a 3 g daily maximum, which is below the ISSN's 4–6 g; follow the label or your professional's advice rather than exceeding it.
  • Unflavoured, single ingredient.
  • Testing. None of the four powders shows a verified third-party certificate. Drug-tested athletes should prefer batch-tested products.

Who benefits?

Beta-alanine suits 400–1 500 m runners, swimmers over 100–400 m, rowers, combat sports, CrossFit and repeated-sprint team sports. It does little for 1–5 rep strength or steady-state endurance such as Comrades. The tingling (paraesthesia) is harmless; split doses reduce it, as explained in what beta-alanine tingling means. Avoid in pregnancy and under 18 unless a doctor advises otherwise, and check with a doctor first if you have kidney disease or take regular medication.
