Safety and regulation · Answer
Are protein powders contaminated with lead and heavy metals?
Some are. Consumer Reports in the US (October 2025) tested 23 US protein products, none South African, and found more than two-thirds exceeded its 0.5 µg-a-day lead level of concern per serving; plant-based powders averaged about nine times the lead of dairy-based ones. Whey generally tested lowest. We could not confirm specific South African heavy-metal limits, so check for certificates of analysis.
