Buying guide · Answer

How should you store supplements in South African summer heat?

Keep supplements sealed, dry and cool, ideally in a cool cupboard (many labels say below 25 °C), away from sunlight, stoves, bathrooms and car boots. Powders do not need a fridge; fish oil and probiotics are the most heat-sensitive. In South African summer, a printed expiry date assumes proper storage, so heat and humidity can shorten shelf life.

What are the basic rules?

  1. Cool. A cupboard inside the house, away from the oven, kettle and windows.
  2. Dry. Humidity clumps powders and spoils effervescent tablets.
  3. Dark. Light degrades oils and some vitamins.
  4. Sealed. Close lids tightly; use a dry scoop; never leave the scoop in the tub.
  5. Original packaging. Keep batch and expiry information, and any desiccant sachet in place.

Which South African conditions cause trouble?

  • Car boots and glove boxes. Temperatures inside parked cars can climb far above the outdoor reading in summer. Do not leave supplements there on a drive from Johannesburg to the coast or a trip to a race.
  • Humid coastal climates. Durban and Lowveld humidity drives clumping and mould in poorly sealed tubs.
  • Hot kitchens. Avoid shelves above or beside the stove.
  • Bathrooms. Steam ruins tablets and powders.
  • Delivery vans. Parcels sit in hot vehicles in summer; unpack promptly.

Which supplements are most sensitive?

SupplementSensitivityWhat to do
Fish oil / omega-3Oxidises (rancid smell)Cool, dark place; refrigerate after opening if the label says so
ProbioticsViability falls with heatFollow the label; many people refrigerate in summer
Vitamin C, B vitaminsGradual potency lossAvoid heat and light

Effervescent tabletsHumidityTight lid

Do supplements need a fridge?

Most powders do not. A fridge can create condensation when you open the tub, which introduces moisture. Load-shedding is not a storage problem for powders, because they are shelf-stable at room temperature. Probiotics are strain-specific and their viability depends on storage, so follow the label.

How do you tell if heat has damaged a product?

Rancid or sour smell, hard clumps, discolouration, a damp feel, mould or swollen sachets mean replace it. Read are expired supplements dangerous.

Specific guides

For product-specific tips, see how to store whey protein in South African heat and how to store creatine in South African heat. If you buy in bulk, remember that large tubs of omega-3 or probiotics may outlast their potency before you finish them.

A note on drug-tested athletes

Poorly stored, opened or decanted products cannot be traced to a batch. If you are tested, keep products in original containers with batch numbers (see what third-party tested means).
