Vegan protein powder in South Africa costs about R150 to R530 a tub (400 g–1 kg) in October 2026. Where labels publish protein, that is roughly R8–R30 per 25 g of protein: unsweetened pea isolate (Faithful to Nature R148–R185 for 650 g) is cheapest, mainstream flavoured blends cost about R17–R30.

Protein density varies from 50% (Biogen) to 75% (pea isolates). A cheap tub of 50% protein powder can cost more per gram of protein than a dearer tub of 75% isolate. Always divide by protein.
Plant powders are not dearer per gram of protein than whey: whey costs about R15–R42 per 25 g of protein in October 2026, plant about R8–R30. But plant protein usually needs a larger serving to match the leucine of whey (plant vs whey for muscle).
