What is the best plant protein for weight loss in South Africa?

For weight loss in South Africa, choose the plant protein with the most protein per scoop and the shortest ingredient list. As of October 2026, Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate gives about 75 g protein per 100 g for roughly R11 per 30 g of protein, and it has no sweeteners. Flavoured blends from USN, 32Gi, Biogen and NPL cost about R21 to R36 per 30 g.

What makes a plant protein good for weight loss?

Three things: protein density (grams of protein per 100 g of powder), cost per 30 g of protein, and whatever else comes with the scoop, such as added fats, sweeteners and fibre. Protein helps people eating in a calorie deficit hold on to muscle; the ISSN suggests 2.3-3.1 g/kg/day can help trained people preserve lean mass while dieting. No powder burns fat by itself.

Which one should you pick?

Best value and cleanest label: pea protein isolate. The Faithful to Nature tub is a single ingredient (dehulled yellow peas) at about R11 per 30 g of protein. The trade-off is taste and texture: it is earthy and best blended into a smoothie with oats, fruit or cocoa. Pea is also low in methionine, so pair it with rice, grains or seeds across the day; see pea vs rice vs soy protein.

Best flavoured option: USN BlueLab (pea with pumpkin and watermelon seed protein) or 32Gi (pea and rice isolates). They taste better than plain pea, at about two to three times the cost per gram of protein.

Watch the extras: NPL and Primal blends add MCT oil and bamboo fibre. That is not harmful, but it adds fat calories to a deficit, which matters when you are cutting.

How much plant protein should you use?

Plant proteins are lower in leucine than whey, so a 30-40 g protein serving is a better target than 20-25 g. Use one serving to fill a gap in your day, not to replace meals: whole foods keep you fuller on fewer calories. If you are vegan, see plant protein vs whey for muscle and the best plant protein in South Africa.

A safety note

Consumer Reports (October 2025) found plant-based powders carried about nine times the lead of dairy-based ones. Rotate sources and prefer brands that publish certificates of analysis. People with kidney disease should check their protein target with a doctor or dietitian first.
