For building muscle, no meaningful extra benefit has been shown. Leucine, isoleucine and valine are found in every complete protein. A 25 g scoop of whey provides about 2.5–3 g of leucine alone, and whey is roughly 10–11% leucine by protein weight. A diet reaching 1.4–2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight (the ISSN range) already delivers more BCAAs than a scoop of powder.
Why can't BCAAs do the job alone?
Muscle protein is built from all nine essential amino acids. BCAAs trigger the signal (via mTOR), but without the other six the building blocks run out. Wolfe's 2017 review concluded BCAAs alone cannot support a sustained increase in muscle protein synthesis. The AIS lists BCAAs in Group C, supplements it does not advocate for athletes.
What are the common myths?
- "Sipping BCAAs in training prevents muscle breakdown." Not shown in people eating enough protein.
- "BCAAs are better than whey because they are pre-digested." Whey is digested quickly anyway and supplies all the essentials.
- "The more leucine the better." Returns flatten once you reach about 2–3 g leucine in a protein-containing meal (see leucine supplement: do you need it).
When might BCAAs or EAAs make sense?
- Your overall protein intake is low and cannot be raised easily.
- You are plant-based and want a leucine top-up (a complete EAA mix or a pea-rice blend is better).
- You cannot tolerate whole protein around training.
Even then, an EAA mix or more protein is a better fix than BCAAs alone. See BCAA vs EAA in South Africa.
What do BCAAs cost in South Africa?
As of October 2026, 12:1:1 BCAA powders cost roughly R9–R14 per 10 g of powder: Evox BCAA + Glutamine 330 g is R294.99 at Dis-Chem (R8.94), USN BCAA Super 315 g is R299–R314.99 (R9.49–R10.00), Clicks BCAA Formula 180 g is R199 (R11.06) and Nutritech All Day BCAA 5000 180 g is R249 at Clicks (R13.83). By comparison, NPL Platinum Whey Plus 1 kg (R490, NPL shop) costs R23.52 per 30 g of protein and brings all the amino acids.
What should you watch for?
Protein powders can be inflated by cheap added aminos, which show on the ingredient list as free amino acids; South African testing has found label and amino-acid mismatches in some products, though brands are not named in public summaries. See what is amino spiking. Maple syrup urine disease is a contraindication to BCAAs. Pregnant people, those with kidney or liver disease, and anyone on medication should check with a doctor or dietitian first. For ranked options if you still want one, see best BCAA in South Africa.
Under-18s should meet protein needs from food rather than amino-acid or fat-loss powders.
