Do you need a mass gainer?

A mass gainer is mostly carbohydrate (usually maltodextrin) with some protein and fat. It works only because it adds calories. The ACSM, Dietitians of Canada and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics agree that energy intake drives weight gain; no powder builds muscle without training and enough food.

A gainer helps if you:

  • struggle to eat enough because of appetite, a fast metabolism or a busy schedule,
  • train heavily (rugby forwards, rowers, young athletes in growth spurts),
  • need a quick 600–1 300 kcal between meals.

Aim for a modest surplus of roughly 300–500 kcal a day and a protein intake of 1.6–2.2 g/kg. A full gainer serving can exceed that surplus on its own, so many people use half a serving.

What should a mass gainer cost in South Africa?

Local 4 kg tubs cost R466–R600 in October 2026, or roughly R116–R150 per kg. Judge them by protein and serving, not tub size.

For comparison, a pure whey such as USN BlueLab costs about R28 per 30 g protein. A gainer is cheap protein only when the carbohydrate is something you actually need.

The home-made alternative

You can match a gainer with food for similar or lower cost. A blender shake of 500 ml full-cream milk, 60 g oats, a banana, two tablespoons of peanut butter and one scoop of whey gives roughly 900–1 000 kcal and 50 g protein. USN's own listing notes that mixing its gainer with 800 ml full-cream milk adds 26 g protein. Using an unsweetened whey (for example Lifestyle Food or ATP Fitness unflavoured concentrate) keeps the shake free of sucralose and lets you control sugar.

Brand by brand

1. Biogen Bulk 45/150 Mass Gainer (4 kg) (Best value gainer)

Biogen Bulk 45/150 does what its name says: 45.3 g protein and 150 g carbohydrate per 226 g serving, with 24.6 g of that carbohydrate as sugar. At R600 for 4 kg from the Biogen shop, that is about 17.7 servings, R33.90 per serving and R22.45 per 30 g protein, the lowest verified figure among gainers. It is stimulant-free and Biogen states Informed Choice certification on the page (not checked against the register). The 226 g serving is smaller than NPL's or Primal's, which makes it easier to drink in one go.

Strengths: Lowest verified R per 30 g protein among gainers (R22.45); Moderate 226 g serving; Informed Choice certification stated by Biogen

Trade-offs: 24.6 g sugar per serving; Sweeteners not named in the page text; Informed Choice is retail-sampled, not batch-tested

2. NPL Hyper Gain Mass (4 kg) (Most calories per serving)

NPL Hyper Gain Mass is the heavy-duty option: a full 350 g serving (six scoops) gives 53.6 g protein, 255 g carbohydrate and about 1 365 kcal. At R500 for 4 kg from Dis-Chem, that is R43.75 per serving and R24.49 per 30 g protein. NPL also directs a 175 g half-serving, which suits most people better. It is sucralose-sweetened. Choose it if you burn a lot of energy (rugby forwards, rowers, very active teens under supervision) and want the maximum calories per Rand.

Strengths: About 1 365 kcal per full serving; R24.49 per 30 g protein; Half-serving option on the label

Trade-offs: Full serving is very large and easy to overshoot; Sucralose-sweetened; No certification stated

3. PVM Fusion Mass (2.4 kg) (Best lean gainer)

PVM Fusion Mass is closer to a high-calorie protein shake than a classic gainer: 33 g protein and 27 g carbohydrate (12.1 g sugar) per 75 g serving. At R960 for 2.4 kg and 32 servings, that is R30 per serving and R27.27 per 30 g protein. It suits people who want to gain slowly without huge carbohydrate loads, or athletes who want a recovery shake with more energy than plain whey. It is sweetened with sugar, fructose, cyclamate and saccharin. PVM states FSSC 22000 manufacturing certification and WADA-legal ingredients, which are brand statements, not sport testing.

Strengths: Manageable 75 g serving; Better protein-to-carbohydrate ratio than classic gainers; Published servings (32) and nutrition

Trade-offs: Highest price per kg among local gainers (R400); Sweetened with cyclamate and saccharin as well as sugars; Not enough calories per serving for hard gainers

4. USN Mass Gainer gH (4 kg) (Cheapest per kilogram)

USN Mass Gainer gH is the cheapest gainer per kilogram we found: R466 for 4 kg at Dis-Chem, or R11.65 per 100 g of powder and R34.95 per 300 g serving. Its carbohydrate base is maltodextrin, waxy maize starch and isomaltulose. The protein per serving is printed only in an image on the listing, so we cannot calculate R per 30 g protein. USN says mixing with 800 ml full-cream milk adds 26 g protein per serving. It uses sucralose and acesulfame K.

Strengths: Lowest price per kg (R116.50); Mixed carbohydrate sources; Widely available

Trade-offs: Protein per serving not readable in text; Two sweeteners: sucralose and acesulfame K

5. Evox Alpha 5XL Mass Gainer (4 kg) (Budget alternative)

Evox Alpha 5XL costs R540 for 4 kg at Dis-Chem, or R13.50 per 100 g of powder. The listing mentions a 50 g protein blend and a 215 g carbohydrate stack without stating whether those figures are per serving or per tub, so we could not calculate cost per serving or per 30 g protein. Check the panel on the tub. It is a reasonable budget buy if the label confirms a 50 g protein serving. A 1 kg tub costs R149.99.

Strengths: R13.50 per 100 g powder; Evox is easy to find at Dis-Chem

Trade-offs: Serving data unclear on the listing; Sweeteners and certification not stated

6. Primal Mass Gain (4 kg) (Dis-Chem budget option)

Primal Mass Gain is R550 for 4 kg (R13.75 per 100 g) with a 334 g serving of about five scoops in 500 ml liquid, so roughly R45.92 per serving. The nutrition table was missing from the Dis-Chem page, so protein and calories could not be checked. It is sucralose-sweetened. Given the large serving and the missing label data, Biogen and NPL are easier to recommend at a similar price. A 1 kg tub costs R209.99.

Strengths: Budget 4 kg price; Three flavours

Trade-offs: Nutrition table missing from the listing; Large 334 g serving, R45.92 each; Sucralose-sweetened

7. Weider Mega Mass Gainer (4 kg) (Import at local pricing)

Weider Mega Mass Gainer sells at Dis-Chem for R555 per 4 kg (R13.87 per 100 g), in line with local brands. We captured only the price from the listing, not the nutrition panel or ingredients, so we cannot rank it on protein. Read the tub before buying. It is the same price per kilogram as Evox and Primal, so the decision comes down to the label: compare protein per serving, sugar per serving and serving size before you buy, and favour whichever gives more protein for the same scoop. If the panel shows less than about 40 g protein per serving, Biogen Bulk 45/150 is the better buy at a similar price.

Strengths: Local-level pricing for an international brand; 4 kg tub

Trade-offs: Nutrition and ingredients not captured; No certification stated

8. Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass (5.4 kg) (Premium import)

Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass lists 50 g protein and over 250 g carbohydrate (about 1 250 kcal) per two-scoop serving, with no added sugar claimed. At R1 925 for 5.4 kg at Dis-Chem, it costs R35.65 per 100 g of powder, about three times local gainers. The serving weight is not stated, so R per 30 g protein cannot be calculated from the SA listing. It is a well-known product, but on value it ranks last. Use half a serving if you need fewer calories.

Strengths: 50 g protein and about 1 250 kcal per serving; Large 5.4 kg tub; Well-known international brand

Trade-offs: About three times the price per kg of local gainers; Serving weight not stated on the SA listing

Large servings and contaminant exposure

Because gainer servings are 200–350 g, any contaminant in the powder is multiplied. Consumer Reports (US, October 2025) tested 23 protein products and found the highest lead per serving in a mass gainer, at 7.7 µg. That study did not include South African brands, and no SA brand on this page publishes heavy-metal testing. It is a reason to use the smallest serving that meets your energy needs and to get most calories from food.

Gainers, teenagers and SAIDS testing

School rugby players are the biggest gainer market in South Africa, and they are also tested by SAIDS. Strict liability means a contaminated product is the athlete's problem. SA Rugby's BokSmart programme and SAIDS both recommend food first for under-18s, with a registered dietitian involved if extra energy is needed. Avoid gainers that add creatine 'stacks', testosterone-booster herbs or stimulants. None of the gainers here publishes Informed Sport batch testing. Anyone with diabetes, insulin resistance or kidney disease should speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before using a gainer.

Storage and mixing tips

Gainers are shelf-stable and need no fridge. Keep 4 kg tubs sealed and out of a hot garage; humidity makes maltodextrin clump. Mix with cold milk in a blender, drink within a couple of hours, and split a large serving into two shakes if it causes bloating.

How we compared

  1. We included every mass gainer with a dated October 2026 price from Dis-Chem Living Fit or a brand shop.
  2. Primary measure: Rand per 30 g of protein, calculated from published protein per serving and serving weight.
  3. Secondary measures: sugar per serving, serving size and sweeteners.
  4. Products without published protein per serving were ranked by price per 100 g of powder and say so in their entry.
  5. Rankings follow our published method. ATP Fitness does not sell a mass gainer and does not appear in this ranking.

FAQ

What is the best mass gainer in South Africa?

On cost per gram of protein, Biogen Bulk 45/150 4 kg was the best-value gainer in October 2026: R600, with 45.3 g protein per 226 g serving, or R22.45 per 30 g protein. NPL Hyper Gain Mass gives the most calories per serving, and USN Mass Gainer gH is the cheapest per kilogram.

Mass gainer or whey protein?

Choose whey if you already eat enough calories and only need more protein. Choose a gainer only if you cannot eat enough food to gain weight. A gainer is mostly carbohydrate, so it is a calorie supplement, not a better protein.

Do mass gainers make you fat?

They make you gain whatever your total calorie surplus allows. A full serving of 1 250 kcal or more can push you well past a 300–500 kcal daily surplus, which favours fat gain. Use part of a serving and train consistently.

Can teenagers use mass gainers?

Teenagers should get extra energy from food first, ideally with a registered dietitian's guidance. School athletes tested by SAIDS are strictly liable for any banned substance in a product, so avoid gainers with added boosters or stimulants. BokSmart, SA Rugby's safety programme, takes the same food-first line.

How much does a mass gainer cost per serving in South Africa?

In October 2026, local 4 kg gainers cost about R34–R46 per full serving: Biogen Bulk R33.90, USN Mass gH R34.95, NPL Hyper Gain R43.75 and Primal Mass Gain R45.92. PVM Fusion Mass costs R30 for a smaller, leaner 75 g serving.
